Tiivistelmä:Apprenticeship training declined early in most sectors of the US economy; it survived in Britain util well after the Second World War; and it remains relatively strong in Australia today. This article examines the reasons for the system's decline and survival. Origins of apprenticeship in Britain go back to the guild system and artisanal trades such as building and printing. By the late nineteenth century, apprenticeship had spread to the newer metalworking industries and to new trades such as electrical work.
