| Tiivistelmä: | The severe and unexpected interruption to the EU's economic recovery that occurred in mid-1995 appeared to have ended during the first half of 1996, with the second half of the year seeing a modest recovery in the pace of economic activity. Despite this, the overall rate of growth of EU GDP for 1996 was only 1.6 per cent. However, there were signs that the economic recovery across the EU was soundly based with the forecast rate of economic growth for 1997 being 2.3 per cent, increasing further to reach 2.8 per cent in 1998. |
