Tiivistelmä:Custom products are often desired by buyers at commodity prices, with no switching costs. Alternatively, suppliers would like to sell mass-produced products at custom prices, with prohibitive switching costs. Information technology has, however, typically served the interest of the supplier in the ongoing market tensions btw. buyers and suppliers. The well-known strategic success companies (e. g. the American Airlines or the American Hospital Supply) have illustrated supplier success through differentation, channel dominance, and increased switching costs, resulting in greater market share and higher margins. It is presented in the article e.g. that because Internet-based brokering lowers the entry barriers for many small businesses, it is expected the buyers consortiums to benefit and also secure better price competition from more rivals in the supplier marketplace.
