Tiivistelmä:Organized labor in the United States is in very serious trouble: declining membership,a hostile political environment and so on. The union difficulties are deeply rooted in the history. Until the 1930s there were craft unions which survived. Principal limitations of these in face of technological change. Their commitment to mass production and to old protective actions nowadays is wrong. In more flexible smaller firms unions are not well represented. The most important conditions for the unions' survival are: readiness to cooperate with employers, to be responsible for the welfare of the industry as a whole,to work on behalf of the regional economy,to seek alliance within the same industry.
