Tiivistelmä:Building societies are the principal financial institutions in the personal savings sector and the main providers of home mortgages. They have seen spectacular growth in recent years, yet they have failed in the public eye to differentiate their corporate identity from banks. The main aims of the authors are to examine the response of the building societies in the UK to changes in the market environment in the 1980s, with particular reference to a growing emphasis of corporate identity. They trace briefly the development of building societies as a collective movement and their commercial success. The changing competitive environment is examined with deregulation and growing competition with the banks.
