Tiivistelmä:Patenting schemes have gone through a various changes in the 1990s whit shift in competition towards the importance of technical inventions from price-focused one, increase in patenting worldwide, and the emergence of the 'patent thicket'. In this article the importance of patenting versus secrecy in the inventions' market phase when the objective is to protect intellectual property (IP) is investigated. Based on experience from German manufacturing, patens are an effective way to defend IP, whilst secrecy seems to be an appropriate measure with inventions waiting to be commercialized.
