Tiivistelmä:The class theory continues to be the major sociological explanation of social inequality and specifically the EGP (or Goldthorpe) class schema has obtained a dominant role in empirical research during the last decades. Using an unique Swedish data on employment relations this paper tests empirically the theoretical foundations of this model. The findings show that reciprocal dependence relations between workers and employers are conspicuously unimportant in a class context and that the skill content of jobs is the most important source of class advantage. The early theoretical justifications accords well with these empirical results and the conclusions drawn are that the future theoretical work on class inequality should return to the skill-based roots of the model.
