| Tiivistelmä: | This paper proposes and applies several welfare (hereafter as: w-f.) measures combining average income with a measure of inequality (here as: ineglty.) in order to undertake cross-country comparisons of aggregate w-f. from 1970 to 2000. The w-f. measures are based on theoretical and empirical findings on the role of ineqlty. in social welfare and change drastically the impression of levels of w-f. etc. While the results are sensitive to the type of ineqlty. and its presumed effect on w-f., the results are robust to different ways to address comparability problems inherent in the ineqlty. data used. |
