Over time, the Net, a vast computer interchange accessible to anyone with a computer and modem, could fundamentally restructure the brokerage business and grab the active traders who are the Street's best customers. The situation is similar to the mid 1980s, when Charles Schwab & Co. shook up the big full-service behemoths such as Merrill Lynch by offering discount commissions. The new wave of online upstarts, such as Lombard and E*TRADE could pose a similar challenge. |
