Tiivistelmä:The Greek food retail market is one of the smallest in Europe and with one of its main characteristics being the plethora of small retail outlets. These outlets mushroomed across the country especially during the 1950s and 1960s due to the low cost of entry and the limited range of alternative employment opportunities. However, during the last decade, increased competition from domestic and international multiples has led to a decrease in their number. A major characteristic is Greece's relatively small population (around 10,5 million) concentrated in the two major conurbations of Greater Athens and Thessaloniki, which account for a fourth and a tenth of the population respectively. Therefore, domestic and international food retailers focus their initial expansion on these two cities.
