Tiivistelmä:SABRE, American Airlines's reservation system, generated substantial increases in traffic, created market-power advantages over the competition. It represents a billion-dollar asset to the corporation. The power of information technology is assessed. American Airlines have spent 30 years handcrafting computer systems. The concept of information utility is defined. The lessons from the SABRE case study are summarized. A series of present and future applications are examined. The potential of workstations and their network organization is shown: they eliminate paper, slash layers, speed decisions, simplify the information flows. Technology reshapes the nature of work, redefines structures and recedes into the strategic domain.
