Tiivistelmä: | This article deals with whether CEOs matter in some countries more than in others. The question is explored through a theoretical concideration of three fundamental national-level institutions. It is argued that CEOs in different countries face systematically different constraints on their lattitudes of action, and they differ in how much influence they have on firm performance. The argument is tested by applying a variance components analysis methodology to 15-years of samples of 100 U.S. firms, 100 German firms and 100 Japanese firms. Results suggest evidence that the effect of CEOs are much greater in U.S. firms than in German and Japanese firms. |
