Tiivistelmä:Customers, suppliers or competitors (hereafter as: cts-sls-cmps.) from outside of a firm's traditional home market are increasingly sources of promising innovation impulses. This study examines how firms can adjust their absorptive capacities (here as: abs-cap./abs-caps.) to benefit from these new opportunities. These capabilities are suggested to depend on the investments in abs-cap. development, international experience as well as the generousity of the home market environment. These hypotheses are empirically tested based on a survey of over 2.200 German firms. It is found that the globalization of abs-caps. is a combination of refining their development, export experience and shortcomings of the domestic innovation environment. The importance of each individual factor varies as to the source of the impulse, that is, whether it comes from foreign cts-sls-cmps.
