Tiivistelmä:The article examines the use of performance appraisal in German companies. First, hypotheses on individual and job-based determinants of performance appraisal usage are derived. Hypotheses are tested based a representative German data set on individual employees. The effects of performance appraisal on performance pay and further career prospects are also investigated. The findings reveal that performance appraisal is positively linked to an individual's willingness to take risks. According to findings the performance of women and older employees is evaluated less frequently. Moreover, larger firms evaluate the performance of their employees more.
