| Tiivistelmä: | According to recent reports, several industrial countries face demographic projections that the supply of persons available for academic positions will not be sufficient to meet future hiring needs. This article seeks first to inform policy debate on staffing issues in academe, secondly by identifying some of the most important staffing problems arising from the demographic realities. Although differing in timing and extent, most industrialized countries will be affected by staffing issues and need to consider, too, how the responses taken in one country may affect the staffing picture for other countries. |
