| Tiivistelmä: | On May 4 the European Parliament duly approved the treaties of accession for Austria, Sweden, Finland, and Norway to join the European Union at the end of the year. Whether all of them do so depends on the outcome of their forthcoming national referenda. Once the newcomers are inside, the EU will tackle the much more difficult task of preparing its neighbours in Central and Eastern Europe for eventual membership. The EU Cuoncil of Ministers decided to negotiate an interim agreement with the new South African government and work to get remaining UN and EU sanctions lifted. |
