Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the gender impact of the Canadian system of first-dollar health insurance. It analyzes the use of physician's services and acute-care hospital services. The data describes the use by age and sex of healthcare resources offered to any Canadian citizen or legal permanent resident without out-of-pocket expense. The authors argue that women have a particular interest in maintaining single-payer insurance. They note that medicare transfers resources to women of childbearing age from the rest of society, a form of social wage is paid as in-kind compensation to women for nonpaid reproductive labor.
