Tiivistelmä:Power sector investment planning should not only be studied from the perspective of electric utilities, but also from the viewpoint of the economy as a whole. Owing to persistent power shortages, captive generation in India plays an important role in mitigating outage costs. However, little information is readily available on the utilization of such decentralized generating capacity and a field survey provides interesting insights. Although investment in captive capacity is outside the utilities sector, it has been explicitly considered as a generation alternative in the power planning exercises.
