Tiivistelmä:A translog cost function was fitted to the data pertaining to the Electricity Trust of South Australia from 1950 to 1984. The results suggest that the translog cost function is superior to any available models in explaining factor substitution in an electricity industry. The model supports the view that there are cost advantages in retaining ETSA's monopoly position. The existing economies of scale and the high degree of substitutability between energy and capital imply that a rise in energy prices may not affect the cost of production significantly, provided other factor prices do not rise at the same rate and provided demand for electricity grows.
