Tiivistelmä:This note reports results of research into the factors which impede the growth of employment in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). It attempts to further an understanding of aversion to growth, which is widespread amongst owners of SMEs, and the ways in which this can be countered. The focus is upon the owners of clothing firms in Coventry, a city of 300,000 people in the English Midlands. Ways of promoting positive attitudes to growth are suggested. The research explores the social context within which, it is argued, and attitudes to growth are formed. It is grounded in the conception of the firm as an economic unit embedded within a wider social context which shapes the perspectives and behaviours of owners.
