| Tiivistelmä: | The Maastricht contract renewed the discussion on the instruments most appropriate for the advancement of European integration. First of all the problem whether competition policy or industrial policy should get priority has been put in the foreground. It is shown that competition policy increases the freedom of economic agents, while the most important objective of an industrial policy should be the enhancement of welfare. Several arguments in favour of industrial policy are presented. Some counter-arguments are also considered. The importance of strengthening the international competitiveness through an appropriate competition policy is emphasized. |
