| Tiivistelmä: | The article reviews recent ideas on the notion of topic in spoken discourse and arranges the stages of topical development as follows: (1) topic introduction; (2) topic continuation; (3) topic shift; (4) topic recycling; (5) topic reintroduction and (6) topic change. The structural role of topic in conversation is important for the investigation of 'higher levels' of speech interaction. |
