Tiivistelmä:Policy discussions and the German legal rules both stress the necessity to implement 'economically feasible' solutions in severance pay negotiations for employees which are to be layed off. In this respect, empirical studies generally highlight that resulting financial burdens placed upon firms are rather significant. Nevertheless, the issue of deriving the economic determinants of individual payments has yet received very little attention. The present study picks up this explanatory lacuna by analyzing severance payments as a means to achieve efficient risk-sharing among the members of a labor pool.
