Tiivistelmä:Regional economic disparities in Europe could seriously endanger the process of integration. Therefore it is not surprising that the structural funds are rapidly growing.Recently, there have been three important innovations in European structural policy.First, aid is now extended on the basis of a comprehensive regional development program.Second, aid from the EU only comes in addition to funds provided by the national government.Third, involvement of local and regional authorities in the program is strongly encouraged.Estimations show that structural policy has considerably contributed to employment in the least developed regions. However, not enough attention has been paid to assuring the sustainability of the development, especially with respect to the environment.(str. 54)
