| Tiivistelmä: | Traditional (tayloristic) approaches to strategic management are more and more inadequate to deal with the dynamic and complex conditions of today's market place. A new paradigm is emerging within which the re-integration of planning and doing is of central concern. Much has been written about the characteristics of this new paradigm, but a consistent and comprehensive theory is still missing. In his new book, Robert Simons presents a "management control system" which seems to take up the central elements of the new paradigm. We critically discuss the contribution of "Levers of Control" to a new theory of strategic management. We come to the conclusion that it does not overcome the tayloristic assumptions. Nevertheless, the structure, concreteness and practicability of Simons' management control system make a milestone on the way to a new theory of strategic management |
