Tiivistelmä:This study examines corporate performance effects of cross-business knowledge synergies (hereafter as: c-b-kn-sgs. / for 'knowledge' as: kn.) in multi-business firms, synthesizing the resource-based view of diversification and the economic theory of complementarities to conceptualize c-b-kn-sgs. in terms of the relatedness (here as: r-ness.) and the complementarity (here as: cmp-y.) of kn. across business units of the multi-business firm. The study hypothesizes that corporate performance is improved when the firm simultaneously exploits a complementary set of related kn. resources across its business units. In a sample of 303 multi-business firms, the study finds that synergies arising from product kn. r-ness., customer kn. r-ness., or managerial kn. r-ness. do not improve corporate performance on their own. Synergies arising from the cmp-y. of the three types of kn. r-ness. significantly improve both market-based and accounting-based performance of the multi-business corporation.
