Tiivistelmä:According to strategic human resource management (HR) personnel management should play a strategic role especially in the industries which are information-driven. A profound study consisting of eight case studies of biotech companies in the US and Australia shows how HR is mostly managed in a not strategic way; there are no HR specialists hired or lower-lever managers take care of the HR. The article demonstrates why there is lack of strategic HR also in the knowledge-driven industries such as biotechnology, and presents the weak and strong points of having line managers accounting for the responsibilities of HR. Propositions for further research are made, and the writers conclude that in biotech companies it's quite rare to hire a HR expert to the company despite the potential benefits underlying here.
