Tiivistelmä:The previous literature has usually explained the pressures for employee flexibility to be a result from the increased market pressures. The authors provide new ideas about employee flexibility by considering the retreat of manufacturing systems founded on traditional hierarchical control and the coming of practices that emphasize on the direct link between employee skill enhancement, market outcomes and rewards. An analysis of the 1998 Workplace Employee Relations Survey (WER98) is introduced and the study presents explanations of the variables associated with flexibility, which are nowadays very important as the transition process towards modern enterprise practices has proceeded. The authors conclude how also endogenous factors that can be directly influenced by management, determine the levels of flexibility. Empirical support based on the analysis of WER98 is provided for the arguments.
