Tiivistelmä:A comprehensive study of construction companies in Northern Ireland is presented in the article. The authors examine the extent to which the mismatch in the employment structure and training provision and/or the failure of training providers to keep in pace with the technical developments of the industry are causing industry level skill shortages. It seems that there is a connection between the unbalance in the existing structure of craft training and skill shortages. The occurrence of open vacancies is however more clearly related to the need for more versatile training driven by the increase of prefabricated building techniques in the industry. It has been difficult to develop and provide this kind of more versatile training as much as needed. The authors conclude also that a large scale shift to more multi-skilled training would be costly because it could reduce the levels of employee productivity.
