Tiivistelmä:This paper aims at developing a theoretical position for understanding the services' role in innovation (hereafter as: inn.) in post-industrial societies, referring to the economies (here as: econs.) of large metropolitan areas in England and Germany. It is argued that the role of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) in inn. may be understood theoretically in terms of institutional and evolutionary econs. It is also argued urban econs. to be path dependent interactive learning systems developing individually through time, characterized by networked production systems with KIBS playing a key role. As a result, it is argued the KIBS contributing significantly to inn. in their cities of location.
