Tiivistelmä:This article studies the academic productivity of Italian academic researchers designated as patentees by the European Patent Office in 1978-1999. The study matches a set of 299 patentees with an equal number of researchers without patents to find out if compromises between publishing and patenting or basic or applied research exists. The findings of the study indicate that Italian academic inventors are more productive scientists that their non-patentee colleagues, but the results also suggest that scientific productivity gains more from tight links with industry than it does from patenting as such. The study revealed that rather than university or individual scientist owned patents, business partner owned patents induce a stronger correlation between patenting and publishing.
