Tiivistelmä:It was hypothesized by A. Smith that impersonal exchange was necessary for a society to develop specialized division of labour and to create wealth. It is argued by D. North and V. Smith that successful developed economies are the result of institutions. This paper hypothesizes and provides evidence from ethnographic data that the basic accounting technology of recording transactions is linked with more extensive impersonal exchange and increased specialization in the division of labour. This paper's intuition is that extensive impersonal exchange requires reliable memory of trading partners' past behaviour to keep trust and encourage reciprocity with a group expanding beyond the size of traditional hunter-gatherer groups. The findings of this paper are consistent with the hypothesis of transaction records being necessary for the emergence of complex economies.
