Tiivistelmä:The purpose of the paper is to discuss why otherwise law-abiding people engage in corruption. According to the authors, the justification for many individuals is rationalization, and it involves overcompensation. The justification presented is therefore excessive compared to the actual act of corruption, and predisposes the individual to more serious illegal actions. The article presents a number of case examples to demonstrate that the gap between the actual act the over-rationalization may provide an explanation why corruption tends to escalate in severity and scope inside the organization.
