Tiivistelmä:Management's job design practices are examined. There is no evidence for a general tendency toward skill-upgrading. Differences in the skill and authority structure of production job associated with the introduction of programmable automation seem to be explainable by a number of factors: the form of the technology adopted, industrial relations systems, the experience of unexpected technical and logistical problems with the technology, and the pre-existing form of work organization. Three management approaches to design of jobs are presented.
