Tiivistelmä:The possible consequences of the shift out of industry into services is not without dangers. Manufacturing is vital to the health and well-being of the U.S. economy. Service jobs are tightly linked into manufacturing. The costs of defense are radically reduced by the existence of a strong domestic manufacturing capability. Robust high-tech producers are critical not only to U.S. national security, but to modern society as well. It is argued that there is no such thing as a post-industrial economy. The most important international competitive weaknesses of U.S. firms are in the production process. Policy can help to make a proper choice of possible economic futures open to America.
