Tiivistelmä:Reasons for direct manufacturing investment in the United States varied, depending on the particular conditions and situations at the level of the individual firm: the large size of U.S. markets, trade barriers and protectionist threats, to overcome trade restrictions, access to technology through manufacturing presence in the United States, currency fluctuations, diversification of risks. From the macroeconomic perspective, one compelling reason is the combined effect of Japan's postwar success in export-led economic growth, the resultant pressures from the trading partners to liberalize the restrictive trade and investment practices and the drastic currency realignment since the early 1970s.
