ELECTRICITY SUPPLY INDUSTRY

Tiivistelmä:Even though the concept of spot pricing or real-time pricing has been intensively studied in the literature for some time, until recently, electric utilities have not embraced it as routine way to market their product. A brief overview of the inefficiencies of average cost-based pricing is presented. The primary reason for the slow adapting of spot pricing, however, is not lack of interest, but the prohibitive cost of communicating spot prices to millions of consumers distributed over a wide geographical area and the administrative cost of implementing real-time prices. A remaining obstacle is that consumers have to understand the significance of a different pricing regime.
