Tiivistelmä:The British and American systems of advertising self-regulation are described and compared. The importance of this kind of activity is highlighted. A comparative analysis of circumstances and actions leading to the establishment of the two systems is presented. Early pressures for self-regulation are discussed. Situation before 1914 is examined. The inter-war period is described. The most important codes established by industry and trade associations are listed. Trends of the developments are summarized. The post Second World War situation is analyzed in detail. The long term climate for advertising self-regulation is found to be more favorable in the UK than in the US.
