| Tiivistelmä: | The decision by manufacturing companies to convert to flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a strategic move that affects the competitive edge of the firm. The decision support system, which consists of the dialog, database and modelling subsystem, is one of the possible ways of simulating scenarios of proposed FMS. In the analysis of cost and benefits several issues have to be addressed such as the capacity of the plant, relevant costs, potential tangible and intangible benefits. The simulation model allows strategic planners to study proposed FMS designs, by altering the number of machines and pallets, demand and breakdown pattern and buffering set. |
