| Tiivistelmä: | Logistics costs have been estimated as a substantial percentage of the gross national product. Strategies to control transportation and inventory costs have always been at the forefront of logistics research, but integrating these two types of cost has been hampered. An algorithm is presented that determines the cycle time that minimizes total logistics cost. The algorithm allows for a realistic representation of freight-rate structure. The rate is modelled as a function of shipping distance and weight. The described algorithm determines the optimal cycle-time for either a single item or a group of items when either demand or lead time is constant or variable and when both transportation and inventory costs are relevant. |
