Tiivistelmä: | Technical inefficiency of manufacturing industry in the UK is examined, based on data for 19,023 establishments in 151 industries. The estimation is done by fitting translog stochastic frontier production functions and the other unobservable random factors in each industry, to these data. This work is the first step in a larger project to explain the sources of technical inefficiency, and to compare efficiency between countries. Technical inefficiency is found in a wide range of industries. It is illustrated by several examples. A more detailed study reveals that about half of the differences can be explained by the extent of competition, by the degree of product differentiation and by the rate of structural change. |
