| Tiivistelmä: | In contrast with the rapid pace of tourism development in the Greek Cypriot south of the island, tourism has grown only slowly in the Turkish Cypriot north since inter-communal hostilities in summer 1974 led to the de facto division of Cyprus. The non-recognition of the Turkish Cypriot sector has prevented direct air communication except via Turkey and limited marketing opportunities and inward investment. As a result, only about 10% of visitors to Cyprus, the overwhelming majority of whom are from Turkey, stay in the north. |
