| Tiivistelmä: | When movie star Candice Bergen instructed her telephone 'to call mom', she opened a floodgate of interest in voice activated systems. The availability of voice driven systems to navigate Microsoft Windows has further heightened consumer awareness and the growth of dictation systems has led some analysts to see speech recognition as a focal technology. At the same time, misconceptions and unrealistic expectations have created confusion and disappointment. This article defines the capabilities and limitations of commercial speech recognition technology and describes the uses to which it can be put. |
