| Tiivistelmä: | Building on the work of Varian and Afriat, a non-parametric analysis of consumption behaviour is presented. Inner-bound and outer-bound preference representations are obtained that are consistent with both the data and the consumer theory. It is shown how a priori information on demand response can be incorporated in the analysis. The approach generates estimates of income and price elasticities of demand. An application to U.S. consumption data illustrates the usefulness of the method of predicting demand behaviour as well as for welfare analysis. |
