Tiivistelmä:As an attempt to reduce organizational slack (hereafter as: org-slc.), downsizing (here as: dn-sg.) is conceptualized in this study. It is suggested that the degree to which dn-sg. will improve firm performance will be contingent on conditions under which the dn-sg. occurs. The level of org-slc. is emphasized as an important contingency. In addition, two other contingencies are also examined: 1. whether the scope of the dn-sg. is broad or narrow, and 2. if the dn-sg. is conducted proactively or reactively. Through a panel dataset analysis conducted by the 100 largest American industrial firms during 1977-1993, broad support is found for this paper's hypotheses that dw-sgs. are more likely to lead to improved performance when firms have high slack, when their scope of the dw-sg. is broad, and when the dw-sg. is done proactively.
