| Tiivistelmä: | Electronic archives, on-line data banks, and other computer-based information services are in everyday use in large amd medium-sized companies. However, things that appear easy to the person acquiring information on a personal computer, place complex technical and economic requirements on the operator of a mainframe behind the scene. The main characteristics of on-line data banks and data-bank services are described and analyzed. It is shown how a retrieval system works. The historical development of supply and demand of information services is reviewed. Some effects of technological innovation are considered. |
