Tiivistelmä:National systems of minimum pay determination in Austria and Switzerland are examined. In both countries, it was found that collective bargaining is the primary source of minimum rates, but the effect differs markedly because of dissimilarities in the bargaining systems. While around 90p.c. of the Austrian workforce (excluding the civil service) is covered by a collective agreement setting minimum rates, this is true of only around 30p.c. the Swiss workforce. In recent years, employers in various sectors have expressed hostility to automatic cost-of-living clauses. The unions have been calling for broader extension of collective agreements.
