Tiivistelmä:Innovation is the key to rising living standards; competition is the key to a rapid rate of innovation. Economists have long known something that has only recently dawned on most policy-makers: rising productivity is the key to rising living standards. This discovery has led policy-makers to broaden their focus from what are generally considered to be macroeconomic issues (interest rates, fiscal policy) to microeconomic issues, most notably competition policy. For rising productivity can only be achieved if there is a rapid rate of innovation, and an optimal rate of the diffusion of new inventions and techniques that make it possible for an economy to produce more goods and services with relatively fewer resources.
