| Tiivistelmä: | Lotman defines two types of culture: culture of texts which is nothing more than the sum of its parts and the culture of grammar, a culture which has a meta- level, a system of rules what governs it. Ancient societies are cultures built on disparate customs. Modern states work according to rules. The army was gradually transformed from an organisation based on custom to one based on rules. Both methods can be successful in diffusing culture. |
