Tiivistelmä:This paper argues that social contexts and social (hereafter as: soc.) capital (here as: cap., for combination as: soc-cap.) enable knowledge (here as: kn.) integration (here as: kn-int.); that different soc. contexts (here as: soc-ctxs.) combined with different types of soc-cap. enable different types of kn-int. Four types of soc-ctxs. are distinguished based on the extent of soc. embeddedness and closeness of interorganizational coupling; these four types are also described. Based on the diversity of kn. streams, the extent of tacitness of kn. to be exchanged, and value created through such exchanges, four modes of kn-int. are identified, that is: frontier, incremental, combinative, and instrumental. This paper provides new insights about the processes of interorganizational transfer of kn: the unique combination of a specific soc-ctxs. with a specific type of soc-cap. means firms can achieve equally effective yet highly differentiated approaches to different modes of knowledge integration.
